Joburg Crisis Alliance Demands Transparency and Accountability from City Leadership
Johannesburg Needs Accountability — Not Political Games
The Joburg Crisis Alliance calls for full transparency in the City of Johannesburg’s coalition agreements and demands an independent performance assessment system for all MMCs. Political power plays and self-serving manoeuvres have crippled service delivery, leaving residents to suffer the consequences of collapsing infrastructure, a worsening water crisis, and failing finances. Accountability must be enforced without fear, favour, or political bias.
The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has voiced deep concern over ongoing coalition instability in the City of Johannesburg, following the Minority Governing Parties' (MGP) demand for the removal of MMC Tebogo Nkokou (PAC).
The JCA is critical of political power struggles that prioritise positions over service delivery, citing examples such as the recent reinstatement of Kenny Kunene following threats by the PA to withdraw from the City coalition..
Amid a crippling water crisis, failing infrastructure, and financial strain, the JCA calls for transparency in coalition agreements and independent performance assessments for all MMCs, the Mayor, Speaker, and Chief Whip. It insists that any recall of underperforming councillors must be based on objective evaluation and not party politics.
The JCA recently called for Mayor Morero to resign due to the ongoing water crisis and for failing to keep promises made to residents. The JCA condemns self-assessment PR exercises and demands greater civil society oversight to ensure accountability and improve service delivery in Johannesburg.
