Johannesburg Kept in the Dark as Eskom Threat Looms

Uncertainty Grows as Eskom Threat to Johannesburg Persists

Johannesburg residents, businesses, and community organisations are being asked to confront the threat of electricity supply disruptions without access to the full facts. The Johannesburg Crisis Alliance has called for greater transparency, meaningful public participation, and an extension of consultation deadlines.

Johannesburg Deserves Answers on the Eskom-City Power Dispute

Johannesburg residents, businesses, and investors are facing growing uncertainty as the dispute between Eskom and the City of Johannesburg continues without clear communication or transparency. The possibility of electricity supply interruptions has created understandable concern across the city, yet many of the critical facts remain undisclosed.

For months, the public has received conflicting messages about the status of the matter. While senior government and city leaders suggested that the crisis had been resolved and that Johannesburg was “too big to fail,” subsequent confirmations revealed that no agreement had in fact been reached. This contradiction has undermined public confidence and left stakeholders uncertain about how serious the threat may be.

The consequences of such uncertainty extend far beyond politics. Businesses require reliable information to plan operations and investments. Residents need to understand potential risks to their homes, livelihoods, and daily lives. Property owners, civic organisations, and community groups deserve sufficient information to prepare and participate meaningfully in decisions that could affect millions of people.

Equally concerning is the limited timeframe provided for public participation. Stakeholders have been asked to respond to Eskom’s administrative process without access to key information regarding the dispute, negotiations, or the measures being taken to prevent a crisis. Genuine public participation is impossible when the public lacks the information needed to make informed submissions.

The Johannesburg Crisis Alliance, together with a broad coalition of civic, business, and property-sector organisations, is calling for greater transparency, an extension of public consultation deadlines, and full disclosure of the facts surrounding the dispute.

Johannesburg cannot navigate a challenge of this magnitude through secrecy and mixed messages. The city’s residents deserve openness, accountability, and decisive action to protect the future of South Africa’s economic heartland.
