Residents Win Back Their Library After Years of Closure
After years of closure, the Louisa Prince Library in Ennerdale is reopening. Persistent community activism, supported by the JCA, JHF, AKF, Friends of the Louisa Prince Library and sustained media scrutiny, helped keep the issue alive. The campaign shows that organised citizens can make a difference. The work continues: reopen other closed libraries, improve maintenance and restore Saturday library services across Johannesburg.
STATEMENT SUMMARY
The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has welcomed the reopening of the Louisa Prince Public Library in Ennerdale Extension 9 on 1 October 2026, describing it as an important demonstration of what sustained civic activism can achieve.
The library’s reopening follows years of closure and a persistent campaign involving community activist Melvyn Petersen, the JCA, Johannesburg Heritage Foundation (JHF), Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) and the Friends of the Louisa Prince Library. The campaign included repeated engagement with City officials, site visits, follow-ups on repairs and procurement, and pressure for clear reopening timelines. In October 2025, the JCA initiated the establishment of the Friends of the Louisa Prince Library to strengthen community involvement.
A significant moment came when Petersen raised the continued closure directly with Executive Mayor Dada Morero at the reopening of the Johannesburg City Library in August 2025. The JCA also acknowledged the vital role of the media in keeping the delays, building conditions and concerns about repairs in the public spotlight.
The Alliance says the lesson extends beyond Ennerdale: organised residents can hold government accountable and help restore neglected public facilities.
The JCA will continue campaigning for other closed Johannesburg libraries to reopen, for improved preventative maintenance and for the restoration and expansion of Saturday library services across the City. It has also called for a community reopening event recognising those who contributed to the campaign.
The library honours Louisa Prince, an Ennerdale community builder, educator and activist who helped establish an early community school in 1942.
