Water Crisis in Joburg: A Human Rights Violation

The Johannesburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has raised urgent concerns over the escalating water crisis in the city, labeling it a human rights violation. In the past 48 hours, thousands of residents have been left without water, with some areas facing shortages for weeks. The City of Johannesburg’s failure to ensure water security and provide adequate backup during interruptions has left communities struggling.

Despite promises from city officials, the crisis continues to worsen, exacerbated by electrical failures at the Vereeniging pump stations. The JCA supports the call for intervention by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and urges immediate action to resolve the situation.

Adding to the frustration, the Mayor’s response has been lacking, leaving relief efforts to community organizations and civil society. JCA demands stronger leadership, better communication, and a clear plan with allocated resources to address the water crisis. If necessary, the city must reprioritize its budget to ensure residents have access to this basic necessity.

JCA stands with the Water Crisis Committee in their planned protest on Saturday, 15 February 2025, at 10:00 AM (Corner of Albertina Sisulu & Queens Street, Kensington). Residents are encouraged to join and demand urgent action.

This crisis is yet another sign of Joburg’s broader collapse, and JCA is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene and take decisive action to address the city’s mismanagement.
