JCA welcomes G20 city fix, but asks ‘what about the residents?’
As Joburg cleans up for the 2025 G20 Summit, residents are asking: What about us?
While the city rushes to impress global visitors, locals continue to suffer from water shortages, waste buildup, and failing infrastructure.
G20 Preparations: What About Joburg’s Residents?
The Johannesburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) welcomes efforts to improve the city, but as Joburg gears up for the 2025 G20 Summit, residents are asking: What about us, Mayor Morero?
While major clean-ups and infrastructure upgrades are planned for the event, daily service delivery failures persist. Last week, residents protested water shortages in Kensington, and the city's ongoing decline—from uncollected waste to crumbling infrastructure—remains unaddressed.
JCA supports initiatives that leverage the G20 for long-term benefits but insists that residents must come first. The city must ensure that improvements extend beyond the summit and serve the people who live here every day.
JCA will mobilize residents to monitor the G20 clean-up efforts and demand the same level of attention year-round, not just for global events.
