Joburg Residents Demand Clarity as City Eyes Future of Marks Park and Surrounding Green Spaces

The Joburg Crisis Alliance is calling for full transparency from the City of Johannesburg regarding its plans for Marks Park and surrounding public spaces. Amid growing public concern, the Alliance warns that meaningful participation is impossible without clear information on which areas are being considered for redevelopment and what the implications are for community and environmental interests.

The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has raised alarm over the City of Johannesburg’s vague and contradictory proposals for the future of Marks Park and its surrounding areas. A council report has stirred public concern, especially regarding the lack of clarity on which specific portions of the 173-hectare Portion 33 (including Marks Park, Botanical Gardens, Melville Koppies, and others) are under consideration for development.

JCA stresses that meaningful public participation—required by law—cannot happen without clear and detailed information. There is confusion over whether the City plans to sell or lease the land, and residents fear the loss of public green spaces. Marks Park, a historic sports and recreational hub, faces uncertainty amid financial strains and possible redevelopment.

While acknowledging the City’s financial challenges, JCA insists these must not come at the cost of vital community assets. The group is urging the City to engage openly, address public concerns, and ensure that any decisions reflect both community and environmental interests. The call is clear: no development without full transparency and meaningful consultation.
