Motions of No-Confidence and systemic flaws.

JOBURG CRISIS ALLIANCE CALLS FOR URGENT LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM AMID GOVERNANCE CRISIS

The Joburg Crisis Alliance has sounded the alarm on the deepening governance crisis in the City of Johannesburg, triggered by repeated motions of no confidence and worsening service delivery. Calling for urgent local government reform and greater civic participation, the Alliance urges residents to prepare for the 2026 elections and reclaim democratic accountability in the city.

The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has expressed grave concern over the ongoing governance instability in the City of Johannesburg, highlighted by recurring motions of no confidence in city leadership.

While these motions are constitutional, the JCA warns they are being misused for political gain, rendering local government dysfunctional. The Alliance points to low voter turnout in 2021, unaccountable decision-making structures, and the marginalisation of ward councillors as signs of a legitimacy crisis. It calls for urgent reforms, particularly in the review of the Local Government White Paper, and urges residents to mobilise ahead of the 2026 local elections to demand accountable, transparent, and people-centred governance.
