No Water, No Trust: Crisis Alliance Demands Accountability
Seven Days to Water or Resignation: Joburg Mayor on the Clock
Joburg residents are tired of empty taps and broken promises. The Mayor has seven days to restore water—or step down. Communities are watching, waiting, and still thirsty.
Johannesburg’s Water Crisis: The Mayor’s Seven-Day Promise
The Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) has challenged Executive Mayor Dada Morero to deliver on his promise to restore water to residents of Claremont, Westbury, and Coronationville within seven days—or resign. Communities have endured years of intermittent supply, with recent weeks leaving taps dry and residents protesting in the streets.
The JCA argues this is not a short-term glitch but a systemic failure affecting areas across the city. Problems range from contaminated water and leaks to tanker corruption and political interference. For the poor, elderly, and children, the crisis has become a matter of dignity, health, and survival.
The Alliance’s demands include:
Accountability: The Mayor, MMC Jack Sekwaila, and the Joburg Water Board must resign if they fail.
Budgeting: Ensure enough funds to pay contractors and complete projects.
No political meddling: Let technical experts run operations.
Immediate relief: Properly managed water tankers for all affected areas.
Credibility & care: Redirect G20 “beautification” funds to essential water services.
Transparency & responsiveness: A single clear action plan, quick repairs, and honest communication.
Water is a constitutional right, the JCA stresses, and Johannesburg cannot claim readiness to host the G20 while its own residents go without. With six days left on the clock, communities remain thirsty—and are watching to see if the Mayor keeps his word.
